COLD DARK WINTER DAYS

Mental wellness for Canadian Parents

Ah winter, January, the season of wellness buzz and cozy vibes. Living in Canada, though, we know the cold and dark winter poses a unique set of challenges, especially for parents with little ones at home.

Yet, even with the winter’s icy grip taking hold, lies an opportunity to weave wellness into our family routines and embrace even the coldest, darkest, and in some cases, the longest days. We have pulled together some ideas on how to explore wellness in a different light.

Health doesn’t have to mean fitness

Forget the norm, the pressures, the hype. Some of us might still have a long way to go to feel ready to take on 2024, and we are well into it. Relish in the slower pace the winter brings, and get a grip on what simple pleasures you have been missing.

Find extra time for snuggling up and slowing down, your soul will thank you. Light those candles, sip warm drinks, play music and find moments to recharge.

Balance wellness with winter

Redefine wellness by finding ways to carve out self-care. Research shows parents need to prioritize self-care to combat parental burnout. Those parents who are taking the time embrace self-care are seeing it payoff in their parenting. So, head out for a date night, a long walk, get reconnected with yourself, reflect on what you accomplished last year, and create some dreams and goals to find balance in the year ahead.

Focus on family wellness

When the snow covers the road and the tranquility sets in, make sure to enjoy it together. Whatever cold, dark winter days look like to you, embrace them. Bring on the cold and snow by focusing on family wellness with some of these easy, family focused ideas:

  • Take moments to embrace the winter nights with a winter campfire and marshmallows

  • Get spring vibes going by getting a jump on your gardening as a family

  • Bundle up, grab shovels and make the neighbours smile as Snow Angels

  • Try a new recipe perfect for a cold day

  • And if the indoor energy is making your home feel like a zoo, try some animal exercises

Take care of your mental well-being by embracing what it means to be a parent during Canadian winters. Try to find even just one moment to reconnect with yourself, and your family, to start something new and set you and your family up for a mentally resilient year.
